Vans Shoe Design
One of the first projects we completed in Mr. Sevilla's class was the Vans Shoe Design Project/competition. Every year Vans Shoe Company hosts an annual contest where students in high school can submit creative new designs for one of their shoes. There were four different styles of shoes to design on and four different categories; local flavor, art, music, and action sports. I was originally going to create a local flavor shoe that incorporated the Mexican influences in San Diego. I thought about having skulls, flowers, day of the dead, calla lilies and things like that. Here are some pictures of my first drafts and ideas.
At first I really liked my idea but when I started actually drawing it on the shoe I wasn't satisfied with the design. I found it difficult to find the right patterns and textures to match the skull and I eventually lost interest in this theme. I completely changed themes and created a shoe for the art category. I really love watercolors, painting with them, the way they look. So I decided to paint the template using watercolors and create a more abstract, unique, and personal shoe. Below is a picture of what my final shoe looked like.
I used the existing lines and tabs of the show to separate it into sections. I made the tongue all the way down to the toe using pinks, oranges, reds, and blended them together. I wanted it to looks kind of like fire or lava or a hot sunset. I painted the side using cooler colors like blues, greens, and purples. I wanted the side to look more like the sky and water. Then I just colored the seams and edges black to give it more of a bold look. I personally really like these shoes but I would be concerned about it appealing to both males and females. If I did another draft I would probably use less pink and more orange and incorporate yellow as well. Overall I am very satisfied with the way they turned out and hope they get picked to be entered into the contest.
