Geometric cubism artist statement
In Ms.Vee’s Math 2 class we completed the Geometric Cubism Art project for Exhibition. For this unit we first studied about cubism art and famous artists such as Picasso. Once we had a thorough understanding of what cubism art was, we started to sketch our own cubist art piece. We completed multiple drafts and received critique. Along with studying cubism we learned about trigonometry, the triangle inequality theorem, and sides and angles inequality theorem. Once we had our final sketch, we had to calculate the area, perimeter, angles, and lengths of all the shapes used in our piece. Then eventually we painted our designs onto a recycled canvas. In my creative piece I designed a unique image of a butterfly. I chose to make my design more realistic than typical cubism art. I chose the colors pink and blue to represent nature and being outdoors on a lovely Spring day and convey positivity and happiness through my piece. The intention of this project was to expose us to a specific style of art and help us gain an understanding of how math and art relate to each other and how math can be used in art. Through the course of this project I learned an abundance of information but I was particularly excited to learn about trigonometry because I had heard about it before but never went into depth on the topic. I feel it is a very important topic and think I will use it for many years to come. Throughout this project I also learned about Picasso’s cubism art and it’s significance during the Spanish Civil War, which is the theme to our Exhibition. In the years leading up to the war, fascism was on a rise all throughout Europe. The Spanish Civil War started in 1936, Picasso looked for ways to support the Spanish Republic. He used images and symbols to represent the causes of the left party. Picasso created a cubist comic strip called "The Dream and Lie of Franco," portraying the General as a revolting little gnome, and wrote a poem to be sold for the benefit of the Spanish Republic. In 1937 Picasso was asked to create a mural for an art exhibit. He found inspiration in April when the city of Guernica was under attack by aerial bombing from the Nationalists. In a way, cubism was a form of propaganda. It helped convey the ideas of the Republic and brought many fame to a tragic event.
