Set and Lighting design
Set Treatment -
When designed the set for Act I, Scene III we tried to stay true to what Lorca envisioned but also put our own artistic spin on it. Lorca describes the set for this scene; Interior of the cave-house where the Bride lives. At the back, a cross of large pink flowers. The doors, curved archways, with lace hangings with pink ties. For the walls, a hard white material, curved fans, blue vases and small mirrors. We decided to incorporate most what Lorca said in the description. There is a cross on the back with pink flowers and green foliage. We also included fans and small mirrors. For the walls, we wanted to represent what houses were like in Spain at the time so we created textured walls, similar to clay, with arched doorways on all walls for accessibility. The set looks fairly simple and original, until the lighting is displayed; then a whole element is exposed.

Lighting Treatment-
We are working with act 1 scene 3, this act is set in the bride’s “cave-looking” house. The major colors we are using are blue, pink, and brown furniture. Because the scene is of the parents arranging their children’s wedding and we feel a very awkward tension rising. We want to show this through bright lighting because everyone acts very direct and blunt. It is not very romantic. The scene starts out dark then it gradually fades to light. There is a light shining from behind the center of the wall on the back of the stage creating a circle of light around the cross. The light has a slight orange hue to it that represents natural sunlight. There is light shining onto the floor coming through the cut out archways in the back. When this light is on, it exposes words that shine through the wall. In the actual production, the words are vows written by the bride and bridegroom that would've been said on their wedding day but that moment never came. The vows would be written in Spanish to attain authentic. As the scene progresses and the bridegroom and his mother enter, there would be light coming down on them from above and slightly in front of them. The light in the back we stay on but dim slightly.
